I write this letter to you, not as a bearing of my heart but as a bearing of something, but not of my heart. A bearing of a Visitor, visiting himself on us, on an unvisitable day. I know by now, you will be wondering who this Visitor might be? The answer is: you must have heard and known about this Visitor, as the Visitor is globally known. The Visitor, which leads to a respiratory illness, has now been reported here, in Nigeria —the country you left before the Visitor came.
Just yesterday, I went to market to buy this diary of mine that I will use to write this letter to you; and just after that day, the government ordered a compulsory lockdown here in Nigeria. After a week of the lockdown, things started being costly.
In the evening, I sat down at Palliative’s shop, the one around our street, together with other customers, to receive our daily palliative, since the government has refuses to give us theirs. We sat there, drinking and discussing about the situations we all find ourselves; and behind me was a group of people celebrating birthday of a military man. All of a sudden, a police Hilux stopped by and everybody, including me, started running. As they say: “vum ka mma kari statement!” I went and hide in one corner at the back of the shop to view what was going on. I was surprised as those policemen came not to arrest anyone but to take bribe and go their way. They charged Palliative for opening when the government has ordered a compulsory lockdown, an amount of twenty thousand naira(#20,000). Palliative negotiated with the policemen and later paid them the amount of ten thousand naira(#10,000) before they go.
To live! You are my life; I, Victim, love you, Freedom, as I love life itself. And if you get to read this letter: it must have been that the Visitor had left; or, that the Visitor might still be around, but not within our eyeshot. And if you do not get to read this letter: it must have been that, the Visitor has come to stay with us. The Visitor that came in various forms, and we all wish to dance on its grave.
