There are two significant lectures in the career of every professor, the first is his Inaugural Lecture while the second is his Valedictory Lecture.
While the Valedictory lecture marks retirement from the University, the first, Inaugural Lecture, marks the Inauguration of his professorial chair as a newly appointed Professor.
The Inaugural Lecture is of significant importance to every Professor because it is usually a time to announce to colleagues, members of the University community and the General Public that you’ve attained the zenith of your career as a lecturer and also allow them to share in the joy of this newly attained height in scholarship. You also go ahead through the lecture to show the direction of your scholarship, your area of research interest and how it contributes to the general good of the society.
For the University organizing the lecture, it offers the opportunity and platform to unveil to the general public the newly admitted intellectual masquerade.
Come Wednesday 16th October,2019 all roads will lead to the University Auditorium,Abia State University located in the serene Uturu community for her 52nd Inaugural Lecture. It will also mark the inauguration of the professorial chair of the inaugural lecturer.
The whole world will gather, members of the academics, students, political, religious and traditional leaders, captains of industry and members of the fourth estate of realm as they watch yet as another academic masquerade is unveiled.
He will be dancing to the admiration of all the academic ‘surugede’ and as you know, such dance is not for the chicken-hearted but for academics of repute who know their onus and will be ready and bold to make a gallantry display of the stuff they’re made of, before not just members of academics but the whole world.
For the 38 years University under Distinguished Professor Uche Ikonne, it has become ‘izu agba aka’ as we walk into every month literary expecting to have atleast one inaugural lecture, and sometimes two in a month. This tradition of inaugural lecture revived under Prof Ikonne, has moved the number of Inaugural Lectures delivered since ABSU was founded from 19 to 52nd and still counting just within 44 months. The implication is that more qualified academics are promoted to the rank of professor as at when due and this is usually followed by the burning desire to inaugurate the professorial chair and join the league of Distinguished Professors. Kudos to Professor Uche Ikonne.
On Wednesday 16th October,2019, it will be the turn of a legend,a veteran academic, and a colossus in Language, Ogbonna Onuoha (Professor of Linguistics/Igbo) to dance the academic ‘surugede’.
Prof Onuoha is not just an intelligent man but a brilliant scholar,a top-notcher, an erudite scholar and quintessential personality. He will be dissecting the politics of language and resource sharing in Nigeria to the level that everyone will appreciate.

His topic is catchy, apt and very interesting
