According to a South African anti-apartheid revolutionist, political leader and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that a son of a mine worker can become the head of mine, that a child of farm worker can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one’s person from another”.
Having said that, one can say without doubt, that Gov. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu is working assiduously to ensure total development and transformation of Abia State particularly the educational sector.
As a thorough bead and research driven academic with enviable pedigrees, he has not hidden his determination to improve the standard of education in the state, as he is proactive in providing Abia State qualitative education.
In Abia State University, the story is the same. Governor Ikpeazu’s unwavering support to Abia State University since he assumed office as the 4th civilian Governor of the State is a testament to the belief that a leader is a servant to his own children, and that the younger generation deserves the best, particularly at Abia State University where he is the Visitor.
It is on record that Gov. Ikpeazu is the first sitting governor in this present dispensation to enlist himself as an academic staff of a university (Pro-Bono) and the first Abia State governor to donate nine (9) brand new vehicles to Deans and Provost of Abia State University.
His decision to Relocate some faculties of University to a more comfortable and conducive site, as well as prompt response to financial needs of the university inspite of lean resources of the state are fine indicators of his unending love for Abia State University.
As a measure to reach out to the poor and encourage education in State, Governor Ikpeazu has approved the reduction of the university’s tuition fee for Abia indigenes.
In order to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the university, Governor Ikpeazu recently donated a brand new Generating set, as well as assist in the connection of the university to national grid.
Furthermore, he assisted ASSU-ABSU with the sum of 10million naira for the construction of its ultramodern secretariat.
Today as we speak, a world class Students Union Government Secretariat in the university, built and furnished by the governor is set for commissioning.
At this juncture it is therefore imperative to note that the ranking of the university has improved from its 93rd position in 2015 to 30th position, all to the credit of our Eminent Governor for magnanimously and meritoriously appointing Professor E. Uche Ikonne, a seasoned Academic cum Administrator as the 7th Substantive Vice Chancellor of the University.
