COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged the world. A record number of children and youths are not attending school because of closures mandated by governments in an attempt to prevent the spread. It has affected educational systems worldwide, as Nigerian students still hope for the future. Gift Chinagorom Nnenna Asomugha, a 200 level student of Abia state University, Uturu shares her experience with Ransome Mgbeáhuru on how the covid-19 pandemic has affected her in recent times.
Since closure of schools, what have you been doing?
Well, since the closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have been into personal development activities such as reading creative books, researching, getting information on starting up a successful YouTube channel, Film and edit videos. I won’t exempt the fact that I’ve been assisting in home chores, Dad’s business and Mum’s business also.
What has been the effect of covid-19 on you?
Since the pandemic started, it has reduced certain privileges I used to enjoy. Prior to the lockdown, I was into a fashion business where I get to style people for occasions, deliver clothings e.t.c. Since covid-19, I have been experiencing a lot of challenges in terms of meeting up with my customers, delivering my products to distant places. and financial constraint has been a major issue. I’ve been thinking of starting my own business where I tend to buy goods and sell with profits, save money and do more businesses. I know it’s actually easier said than done but I strongly believe with God all things are possible.
What do you think will be a positive and negative effect of covid-19 on the lives of university students?
Okay speaking of positive effects, the covid-19 has made university students think outside of the box. They now tend to acquire skills, i.e channeling their strength into various skills. Some medical students now help as aids at hospitals. Some venture into website creations, graphic designs, YouTubing and Blogging due to the uncountable happenings during this lockdown.
Speaking of Negative effects, we have been out of school for a while. We tend to have forgotten what we have been taught at school. Our provisions and foodstuffs at school are already in danger. Some of the students staying out of the campus i.e Renting a room in a lodge make comments like the rents are already reading meanwhile they are home and they get to pay a fresher rent by the time school resumes.
What business have you been into since post covid-19?
I’ve been into affiliate marketing. it’s an online podium. I also earn a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. been doing it for many people
What have been your challenges?
I have been having challenges convincing people on getting some products I have on sale. The cost transport has been unbearable. reaching out to my esteemed customers and delivery.
What is your advice to the youths?
It’s not all about spending money on fanciful things, It’s very wise to invest. Make use of apps like piggyvest, cowry wise or open a savings account and save up money. The pandemic has been an eye opener. students should think about the future and stop living in the now.
Be fulfilled on everything you do during this lockdown. Have passion for the skill you’re learning, for the business you venture into.
